Mike Chapman

Mike Chapman began his career in the music business in 1955 at the age of 8 singing on several radio shows in his native Australia.  His love of pop music soon became an obsession and in 1967 he left Australia for London to pursue his childhood dream.  To become a rock star.  Two years and two groups later (he was the singer in the Downliners Sect & Tangerine Peel) he wrote his first hit song “Soft Delights”.

In 1970, Chapman began to write an incredible string of hits for artists include The Sweet, Suzi Quatro, Mud, New World, Smokie and Exile.  Songs like “Little Willy”, “Ballroom Blitz”, “Can The Can”, “48 Crash”, “Devilgate Drive”, “Teenage Rampage”, “If You Think You Know How To Love Me”, “Living Next Door To Alice”, “Kiss You All Over” and “Stumblin’ In” topped the charts all over the world and established him as one of the ‘70s most creative and successful songwriters.

Chapman’s work as a producer has been no less impressive, he went on to produce, not only most of the hit songs had written, but also hits for Blondie, The Knack, Nick Gilder and Pat Benatar.  Some of his late ‘70s work produced classics like “Heart Of Glass”, “One Way Or Another”, “Dreaming”, “The Tide Is High” and “Rapture” (Blondie), “My Sharona” (The Knack) and “Hot Child In The City” (Nick Gilder).

Chapman also formed Mike Chapman Publishing.  With his first signing, Holly Knight, he wrote hits for Tina Turner (“Better Be Good To Me”, “Simply The Best”, “In Your Wildest Dreams”), Pat Benatar (“Love Is A Battlefield”), Divinyls (“Pleasure And Pain”), he produced hits for Benatar (“Invincible”), Lita Ford (“Kiss Me Deadly”, “Close My Eyes Forever – duet with Ozzy Osborne), Scandal (“The Warrior”) and published a long list of country number one hits for the likes of Exile and Alabama.
